A Falling Out
The existence of this grand greenhouse would not have been possible without the great James Lick. He was generous and had donated the materials to build this Conservatory, but was also tempermental. Lick did not put up with disrespect.
After falling in love with a girl named Barbara Snavely, she became pregnant. Lick decided to do the right thing and ask Barbara's father for her hand in marriage. The father refused, saying "'When you own a mill as large and costly as mine, you can have my daughter's hand, but not before." Lick shot back: "Some day, I will own a mill that will make yours look like a pigsty!"
His words came true and he built an incredible fortune. Lick would use his great wealth to construct grand hotels, the Lick observatory, mansions and the Conservatory of Flowers.
